Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II, has died at age 99 at Windsor Castle in England. His death follows a 28-day hospitalization for an infection and heart condition.
Just two months before what would have been Philip’s 100th birthday in June, Queen Elizabeth announced the death of her husband of 73 years, reporting that he passed away peacefully. Philip had been suffering from various health issues in recent years, making frequent hospital visits.
Philip’s death comes in the wake of the Royal Family’s latest drama surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview by Oprah in which they trashed the Royal Family, accusing them of racism and callous attitudes towards the couple.
Having lived the later years of his life out of the spotlight, Philip was known to despise the attention garnered by the media, particularly regarding the criticisms he was met with due to his reportedly brash personality. In 2017 Philip stepped away from his royal duties, retiring at age 95.
In a statement posted at gates of Buckingham Palace: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
